One of the first things new pet owners need to do when bringing home their pup is housebreaking it. Housebreaking a new dog can be frustrating and requires a lot of patience and commitment. Not sure on where to begin? Here are some tips to make the process a little bit easier.
Stick to a Feeding Schedule
What goes in will eventually come out. Keeping your puppy on a strict feeding schedule will also give you an idea on when your puppy needs to go as he or she will most likely eliminate at a consistent time as well.
Establish the Potty Area
Dogs are creatures of habit. The more they get used to going in a specific spot (or outside), the more they will follow the routine.
Bring the Puppy to the Potty Area Frequently
Bring your dog out to eliminate every morning when he or she wakes up, after meals, and before bed time. Do note that smaller pups have smaller bladders so they may need to relieve themselves more often.
Consider Crate Training
A dog who is crate trained will learn to go until you let him out. Crates are also good dens for dogs to rest in and feel secure.
Know the Signs
Usually a dog would bark, scratch at the door, or sniff and go in circles when they are about to go. Know your dog's behaviors so when they need to go, you can act quickly and bring them outside.
Reward!
Every time they successfully potty outside or at the desired area, reward them with affection and/or a treat. Positive reinforcement will encourage them to repeat the behavior until it becomes a habit.
